SpaceCHI 2023 Presentation at MIT

Introduction

In late June of 2023, I visited the the MIT Media Lab to attend SpaceCHI 3.0: A Conference on Human-Computer Interaction for Space Exploration. I was given the opportunity to deliver a brief presentation on a paper I coauthored with Kathryn Hays and Ruth West titled “Designing Beyond Current Conceptualizations of Spaceflight Experiences.”

Our paper discussed potential experience design approaches and opportunities within the emerging commercial spaceflight industry. As we envision a future where more people have access to space, we should strive to understand and elevate the needs of a wide range of participants in these extreme environments. How might design decisions made today affect people who do not yet have access to space?

The conference organizers intend to publish the papers in the ACM Digital Library eventually. A preprint is available on arXiv here, and a PDF of the presentation slides can be downloaded here.
